Bowdoin Opens Academic Year with 208th Convocation

The College's annual Convocation ceremony, marking the official opening of the 208th academic year, was held September 2, 2009, in Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall.

Following remarks by President Barry Mills, Professor of Physics and Astronomy Thomas W. Baumgarte gave the Convocation address.

Baumgarte's talk was titled, "A Curious Universe."

Dean of Student Affairs Tim Foster presented "Voices from the Past," readings taken from documents recounting the College's history.

Music for the processional and recessional was provided by pianist Jennifer Horng '12.

She performed Johann Pachelbel's "Ciaconna" and Johannes Brahms' "Romanze in F Major."

Violist Seoung-Yeon Kim '10 and pianist Robert K. Greelee, professor of music, provided the musical interlude, Gabriel Fauré's "Après un rêve."
