Graphic Content: Brunswick as Backdrop for New Horror-Comic Series

Story posted June 12, 2009

Private investigator Chris Luna moves back to her quiet hometown of Crooksville, Maine, only to encounter a menacing figure from her dreams known only as "the Slug Man."

This is the stuff of artist Gabriel Hernandez's The Veil, a new horror-comic series whose backdrop is informed by the landscape of Brunswick and other Maine locales.

While working as a teaching fellow in the Romance languages department during the 2006-2007 academic year, Hernandez's sister, Ana Hernandez Walta, photographed various areas in and around Brunswick to inspire settings for the graphic novel.

The Veil was reviewed in the June 4, 2009, issue of The New Yorker. Read the review and see panels from The Veil.
