Registration Underway for Financial Aid Summer Institute

The Maine Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA) is registering participants for its first Financial Aid Summer Institute to be held on campus in August 2009.
The Institute's day-long curriculum tracks address important issues associated with the application, awarding and delivery of college financial aid programs and services.
Workshops have been customized for various public audiences, including one specifically for parents.

Veteran financial aid administrators from Maine's colleges and universities will serve as Institute faculty and offer different curriculum tracks to customize the financial aid learning experience to the needs and interests of various public audiences.
"There are growing information needs among Maine's new admissions and financial aid officers, Maine's guidance community, college advisors and planners," says Associate Director of Student Aid and Institute organizer Gary Weaver.
"And Maine parents are hoping to understand more about the financial aid application and awarding process. The Institute gives them that information."
Course content will focus on proper filing techniques relative to family structure and dependency status; federal and institutional need analysis theory and computation; the use of tax return data; federal, state and institutional grant and loan program eligibility; award package construction; payment plan solutions; and policy and practice variations among school types.
The day-long Institute is scheduled for August 18 or 19, depending on the curriculum of choice, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Druckenmiller Hall on the Bowdoin College campus. Registration is limited. The cost is $175 per person and includes lunch.
MASFAA is a non-profit professional association of practicing financial aid administers dedicated to professional excellence, public service, and financial aid advocacy for Maine students and parents.

Making Sense of Financial Aid

The College also has been instrumental in creating online audio files that let students and their families listen to answers to frequently asked questions — from the institution of their choice.
MASFAA, using a Web site developed by Weaver and Mark Leaman, the College's webmaster, has responded to calls from high school guidance counselors who said they needed more than just another Web site that few have the time to read.
Weaver and Leaman put together digital online recordings that feature financial aid directors from 23 Maine institutions answering frequently asked questions, ranging from, "What are your financial aid filing deadlines?" to "How does your institution integrate local merit scholarships into the financial aid award package?"
