Give & Go Sale Sets Up Shop in New Location

Story posted June 01, 2009

A new location and other changes await those who peruse the wares of Bowdoin's Give & Go sale, to be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Fort Andross, in the space that formerly housed the Northern Mattress and Furniture Store between the Flea Market and Cabot Mill Antiques.

Give & Go has been getting some press of late.

In addition, the presale for the Bowdoin community and Give & Go volunteers will be held on a new day and at a new time.

The presale will be held on Thursday, June 4, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Bowdoin ID or Give & Go badge is required for admission.

Organizers say, as in years past, they will hold a portion of some of the more popular items to ensure their availability for Saturday shoppers.

The sale, now in its eighth year, comprises clothing, bikes, housewares — items that students no longer need or don't want to lug back home.

Everything is cleaned and, when necessary, tested to make sure it functions. Items are then sold at prices well below market value at one of the largest yard sales in the state. Net proceeds from the sale are distributed to participating non-profits based on the number of hours they have volunteered for the event.

Since 2002 the sale has distributed more than $193,000 to participating non-profits in the greater Brunswick area. Unopened food and toiletries are also collected.

Over the years, the sale has donated hundreds of pounds of goods to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program Food Pantry and plans to continue that tradition this year.

Non-profit groups participating this year:

A Paw in the Door
Alzheimers Association
American Legion #171
Beth Israel Congregation
Bowdoin Central School Parent Teacher Club
Brunswick Coastal Rotary
Brunswick Trinidad Sister City Association
Brunswick Venture Crew 789
Cathance River Education Alliance

Merrymeeting Community Shares

Give & Go is another example of Bowdoin's commitment to sustainability. The sale promotes the reuse of viable items and spares them from the landfill — all while helping non-profit organizations in the community.
