An interview with Roger Howell Jr. Professor of History Allen Wells about his book, Tropical Zion: General Trujillo, FDR and the Jews of Sos˙a, aired on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network's show Maine Things Considered Thursday, April 30, 2009.

Tropical Zion tells the story of 750 Jewish refugees from central Europe who were offered an unlikely sanctuary in the Dominican Republic by the brutal dictator General Trujillo.

One of those refugees was Wells' father, a native of Vienna, who was one of only a few members of his family to survive Hitler's scourge.

Wells was writing the book when he was the subject of a 2006 Campus News story that told of his fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Read more here.
