Story posted February 03, 2009
Mark Bayer '79 has a tremendous record of service to Bowdoin. For his many efforts, he was named the recipient of the 2009 Alumni Service Award, the highest honor given by the Bowdoin Alumni Council. The award is presented each year in recognition of an individual's record of volunteer service to the College.
Bayer was President of the Alumni Council, has chaired the Executive Committee, Minority Committee and Nominations Committee, and has also served on the Career Services Committee and Leadership Gift Committee. He was also special gifts chair for the last two reunions.
He has also volunteered his time with the Bowdoin Alumni Schools and Interviewing Committees (BASIC).
Bayer is currently serving the College as a Class Agent in addition to volunteer duties as alumni representative to the Board of Trustees and the Development and College Relations Committee.
"My volunteer experiences with Bowdoin have been incredibly rewarding and I have never worked with a more interesting group of people," Bayer says. "I can't think of a better service to the Common Good than supporting the College's mission."
"Mark does everything thoughtfully and energetically," says Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving Eric Foushee. "He is admired and respected by his classmates, the alumni council, staff, and fund directors. I can think of no one better to give this award to than Mark."
Bayer came to Bowdoin in 1975, was a member of the Delta Sigma fraternity, and was active with the Bowdoin Orient and WBOR.
He graduated cum laude with majors in government and sociology before going on to the Columbia University School of Law.
Bayer is a partner in the law firm Gardere Wynne Sewell in Dallas, Texas. Bayer's son Stephen is a member of the Class of 2012.
First established in 1932 as the Alumni Achievement Award and renamed the Alumni Service Award in 1953, the award is made annually to the person whose volunteer services to Bowdoin, in the opinion of alumni, as expressed to the Alumni Council, most deserve recognition.
The Alumni Service Award will be presented Saturday, May 30, 2009, during Reunion Convocation.
