Shaun El C. Leonardo '01 in ARTnews Magazine
Story posted January 23, 2009
The January 2009 issue of ARTnews magazine includes Shaun El C. Leonardo '01 in its compilation of "Artists to Watch."
The article, "Wresting with Masculinity," looks at the influences behind Leonardo's work, which examines the images and accoutrements of contemporary American sport in an effort to challenge the widespread view of masculinity in the sporting world as illustrated by the media.
Leonardo has been addressing those issues in his art ever since he was a member of the football team while majoring in visual arts at the College.
The article reveals that Leonardo adopted the middle name El C. — short for El Conquistador — as a reflection of "an internal struggle with my own identity," he says.
Leonardo was among five artists involved an exhibition titled Hard Targets — Masculinity and American Sports that ran from October 9, 2008 to January 18, 2009, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
