McDreamy Bowdoin T-shirt on Grey's Anatomy
Story posted October 28, 2008
America's favorite television neurosurgeon was quickly glimpsed wearing a Bowdoin T-shirt recently during prime time. Dr. Derek Shepherd, played by Maine-native Patrick Dempsey on the hit ABC television series Grey’s Anatomy, sported the Bowdoin tee in the show's opening scene on Thursday, October 23, 2008. The episode, titled "There’s No 'I' in Team," was the evening's highest rated show among 18-34 year olds, according to overnight ratings, with an estimated 14.21 million viewers.
The Bowdoin-Grey’s Anatomy connection was hardly a random event. It is the culmination of two-year campaign to adopt Dr. Shepherd as a Bowdoin grad conceived and spearheaded by Cole Harris of the Class of 1978. Harris, who approached the College about the idea in the fall of 2006, delivered a petition to the show's producers in early 2007 that was signed by more than 450 students and other members of the Bowdoin community.
Derek Shepherd (a.k.a. "McDreamy") is the latest character to be associated with the College. Other recent Bowdoin-Hollywood connections include several mentions on the hit HBO series The Sopranos, in which daughter Meadow Soprano visits and applies to Bowdoin (she was ultimately denied admission); along with major characters in the films Gettysburg (1993), The Cider House Rules (1999), and Where the Heart Is (2000). Actor-director Mel Gibson's film The Man Without a Face (1993) was partially filmed at Bowdoin, while lead actor Owen Wilson's character in the upcoming film Tenure (2009) will be a Bowdoin College graduate.
