Getting Ready to Give & Go
Story posted June 02, 2008
A multitude of mini-fridges, a forest of floor lamps and loads of laundry detergent and other items left behind in the mass exodus from campus are just some of the treasures up for grabs at Bowdoin's "Give & Go" sale, to be held Saturday, June 7, 2008, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sale, now in its seventh year, fills Dayton Arena with clothing, bikes, housewares — items that students no longer need or don't want to lug back home.
Everything is cleaned and, when necessary, tested to make sure it functions.
Items are then sold at prices well below market value at one of the largest yard sales in the state.
Net proceeds from the sale are distributed to participating non-profits based on the number of hours they have volunteered for the event.
Since 2002 the sale has distributed more than $153,000 to participating non-profits in the greater Brunswick area.
Unopened food and toiletries are also collected.
Over the years, the sale has donated hundreds of pounds of goods to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program Food Pantry and plans to continue that tradition this year.
As in previous years, the Bowdoin community and Give & Go volunteers will be invited to a presale on Friday, June 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Bowdoin ID or Give & Go badge is required for admission.
Organizers say, as in years past, they will hold a portion of some of the more popular items to ensure their availability for Saturday shoppers.
Non-profit groups participating this year:
American Legion #171
American Red Cross
A Paw in the Door
Beth Israel Congregation
Boy Scout Troop 621

Give & Go is another example of Bowdoin's commitment to sustainability.
The sale promotes the reuse of viable items and spares them from the landfill — all while helping non-profit organizations in the community.
