The Excellence in Diversity Leadership Award recognizes exemplary success in enhancing opportunities for education and building a social environment in which differences among people enrich their perspectives and life experiences.

Bowdoin College President Barry Mills accepted the award at a luncheon held at the Marriott Sable Oaks Hotel in South Portland on April 27, 2007, and took part in a panel discussion of the challenges and issues facing leaders as they help strengthen Maine’s economic future through diversity.

The award was one of several events that took place as part of the NAACP's 5th Annual Celebration of Excellence in Education. Music at an event held at the University of Southern Maine was provided by Hassan Muhammad '10.
