100th Anniversary of Intercollegiate Hockey in Maine
Story posted February 20, 2007
Bowdoin College and the University of Maine squared off a hundred years ago in the first intercollegiate hockey game in Maine.
It was February 16, 1907, and Bowdoin and UMaine were the only two colleges in Maine with teams. Playing on a flooded Whittier Field, Bowdoin won the game before a crowd of about 150.
Despite the enthusiasm, the next year hockey was dropped at Bowdoin, not to be revived until the winter of 1915-16. It wasn't declared a major sport until 1925.
