Legins '92, French '46, Springer Honored During Reunion Convocation

Two alumni and one faculty member were honored at Bowdoin College during the College's Reunion Weekend, held June 1-4, 2006, on campus.
Alumni Kenneth E. Legins Jr., originally from Millinocket, and Herbert S. French Jr. of Hopkinton, N.H., were honored along with Professor Allen L. Springer of Brunswick during the Reunion Convocation ceremony June 3. (Read President Barry Mills's Convocation Address here.)
Kenneth E. Legins Jr., Bowdoin Class of 1992, was given the 2006 Common Good Award. This award, bestowed by the Bowdoin Board of Trustees, honors alumni who have "demonstrated extraordinary, profound, and sustained commitment to the common good, in the interest and for the benefit of society, with disregard for personal gains."
Legins has dedicated his life and career to health education, children's advocacy, and women's rights. He has been a constant leader in HIV/AIDS education, a pursuit that has brought him to all corners of the world, from Maine to New York, to Denmark and Japan, and most recently, to China. Herbert S. French Jr., Bowdoin Class of 1946, received the 2006 Alumni Service Award. This award, the highest honor bestowed by the Bowdoin Alumni Council, is given annually to an exemplary Bowdoin volunteer.
Over the last 60 years, French has volunteered in nearly every imaginable capacity for Bowdoin College. During a demanding business career, he donated countless hours both to Bowdoin and to numerous other volunteer organizations. Read more...
Allen L. Springer, professor of government and legal studies, was presented with the 2006 Alumni Award for Faculty and Staff. This award, bestowed by the Alumni Council, recognizes "service and devotion" to the College.
A noted leader in his department and his field, Springer is also a strong administrator and mentor. He has served as Dean of Students as well as chair of the government department. In 2002 was selected by the senior class to give the Karofsky Faculty Encore Lecture, an honor recognizing a faculty member for their impact as a teacher and a role model. Read more...
