Story posted February 10, 2004

National Girls & Women in Sports Day is Saturday, February 14, and Bowdoin College will host a variety of events for female athletes of all ages.

The celebration kicks off with breakfast at 9:30 a.m., featuring an informal discussion with Jeanne Mayo, physical therapist/trainer emerita, who helped pioneer sports for girls and women at Bowdoin. Mayo's talk, titled "Female Athletes Yesterday and Today - How Far We've Come!", will be held in Moulton Union, Lancaster Lounge, and is open to all members of the community. Breakfast can be purchased for $5 and no reservations are required.

Mini Sports Clinics
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., girls from kindergarten through high school are invited to Sargent Gym to participate in mini sports clinics. Girls will have the opportunity to visit stations devoted to numerous sports to learn the basics or polish their skills with the Bowdoin women athletes. Girls can learn more about basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, golf, volleyball, rowing, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, track and field, tennis, and ultimate Frisbee. All equipment will be provided.

After learning new skills at the mini clinics, girls will have the chance to compete in a decathlon at 1 p.m. Events include bouncing a tennis ball, running a lap, throwing a softball, shooting a basket, dribbling a soccer ball, doing the long jump, and other activities.

All participating girls will receive T-shirts and certificates, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
