Everett P. Pope '41, H'46, H'89, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1945, has been interviewed by Lt. Colonel Oliver North for an episode of the television show War Stories with Oliver North.
The episode, "Peleliu: The Forgotten Battle," will air this Sunday, September 14, at 8 p.m., on the Fox News Channel. (In Brunswick the program airs on cable channel 39.)
During World War II, Captain Pope served as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, during action on Peleliu, a tiny island in the South Pacific. Subject to point-blank cannon fire that caused heavy casualties, Captain Pope rallied his men and led them to the summit of a steep coral hill known as "Bloody Nose Ridge" in the face of machine-gun, mortar and sniper fire. With 12 men and one wounded officer, Pope held the summit through the night, despite dwindling ammunition and continuous attacks from three sides.
