Class of 2007 Begins to Arrive August 26

Story posted August 21, 2003

The Bowdoin College Class of 2007 will begin arriving on campus Tuesday, August 26, for Pre-Orientation activities.

About 70% of the incoming first-year class - which this year numbers 470 - will begin their Bowdoin careers with a variety of "Pre-O" trips.

More than 320 students will participate in trips that focus on the Maine outdoors.

Put together under the direction of Bowdoin's Outing Club (the College's largest student organization), these excursions include backpacking and day hiking in Baxter State Park, mountain biking and day hiking in Acadia National Park, canoe trips to the Debsconeag Lakes and up the Kennebec River, sea kayaking on Casco Bay, fly fishing on the west branch of the Penobscot River, and trips to Isle au Haut and the Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island, Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick.

These outdoor trips serve to build community and leadership among the incoming class, as well as introduce students to the beauty, geography and natural resources of Maine.

Instead of hiking, rock climbing or canoeing, 20 first-year students and five upper-class leaders will participate in a “Community Immersion” Pre-O.

The four-day community immersion experience familiarizes new students with the greater Brunswick area and serves to foster a commitment to community service.

These students will work with some of the more than 50 non-profit organizations in the Midcoast region, including Flying Changes Center for Therapeutic Riding, the American Red Cross, Respite Care and Hospice Volunteers, and Spindleworks. Other activities will introduce the students to Maine's fishing and lobstering traditions, Brunswick history, and greater Portland's immigrant community.

The remaining members of the Bowdoin Class of 2007 will arrive on campus Saturday, August 30, for Orientation.

The College’s 202nd Convocation ceremony, which marks the official opening of the school year, will be held Wednesday, September 3. Classes begin Thursday, September 4.
