Bowdoin MaineShare and United Way Campaign Has Begun

Story posted October 09, 2002

The annual United Way/MaineShare campaign is an opportunity for Bowdoin employees to contribute together in significant numbers to serve our community and the state of Maine.

The Bowdoin College 2002 Workplace Campaign opened this year on September 30 and will run through October 11. Each year, MaineShare and United Way of Mid Coast Maine help thousands of people in the midcoast area and throughout the state -- people who are our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers. Last year the total for Bowdoin's campaign reached $75,500!

The United Way of Mid Coast Maine helps fund 37 local agencies that provide direct health and human services to people in Brunswick and the surrounding area. Eighty-four cents out of each dollar contributed goes directly to these agencies, which help to address the most critical needs across our community through prevention and direct care. Agencies include the American Red Cross, Family Focus, Literacy Volunteers, the American Cross, The Salvation Army, Hospice Volunteers in Mid Coast Maine, Sexual Assault Support Services Midcoast Maine, Shoreline Community Mental Health Services, and the Tedford Shelter.

MaineShare serves 35 agencies throughout the state which promote good health, a clean environment, safe communities, equal opportunity, and stable jobs through a variety prevention and assistance programs. Eighty-five cents out of each dollar contributed goes directly to these agencies. Local MaineShare include Friends of Casco Bay, Maine AIDS Alliance, Maine Animal Coalition, Maine Cardiovascular Health Council, Maine Civil Liberties Foundation, Maine Coalition for Food Security, and the Maine Chapter of Sierra Club Foundation.

As federal and state governments continue to reduce funding for services, local communities must assume an increasing responsibility help make up the difference. Our neighbors need our help. Last year, United Way and MaineShare helped one out of three people in our mid-coast region.

Both United Way of Mid Coast Maine and MaineShare allow you to decide which of their agencies will or will not receive your contribution, and both offer payroll deduction options. MaineShare is a state-wide campaign. Less than 1% of your contribution to the United Way will leave Maine, and all of your gift to MaineShare will stay in the state.

United Way of Mid Coast Maine is a regional campaign, and employees who do not live in the mid coast area may participate in the Bowdoin campaign and designate their United Way contributions to United Way organizations serving their own local communities.
