The Latin American Studies Committee has announced that Sarah Lipinoga '03 and Laura Quinlan '02 have been awarded Summer Travel Grants to conduct research in Latin America.
The grants support student research that contributes to an independent study or honors project that will be pursued upon their return from the field. Students develop proposals in consultation with a faculty mentor who agrees to supervise the independent study or honors project.
Sarah Lipinoga, who will be working on an honors project with Prof. Matt Klingle (Environmental Studies/History) next fall, will study how the Huaorani people in the Amazon River Basin in eastern Ecuador are coping with the environmental impact of development.
Laura Quinlan, whose mentor is Allen Wells (History/Latin American Studies), will be investigating problems associated with the Mapuche Indians' (Chile) migration from rural areas to the nation's cities where they form part of the urban underclass.
