Cape Town Diary: October 12. By Rachel Meiklejohn, Colby College '02

It finally seems as if summer is just around the corner, as the weather has gotten warmer and the winter rains are becoming a thing of the past. This semester on the CBB Cape Town study abroad program has flown by. We have just over a month left here and there is still so much more that I want to do, see, and experience.
This past weekend was an enjoyable and busy one. As a member of the University's cross-country team, I participated in a relay meet against our rival, Stellenbosch. The race took us through some of the most scenic parts of Cape Town. After the race, we had a braai (or as we Americans would call it, a barbeque) at the team's clubhouse, which provided an opportunity for the two teams to mingle. Saturday evening, I attended an end of the year function of a local leadership group for underprivileged high school students. I had been invited to it by several of the students we are involved with in community service. I was impressed by how much they have accomplished throughout the year and their commitment to be "victors not victims" despite the difficult situations they are growing up in.
Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day and several of us from CBB spent it on the beach with a group of 20 students from our community service program at Isilamela high school, in the Langa township. The water was a bit cold, but we had a picnic lunch and spent the rest of the day exploring the beach and enjoying the sun.
This week will be spent finishing up final papers and our documentary films for our History of AIDS in South Africa class. Currently, I am looking forward to the end of classes and my weeklong trip to Durban, a city on the
Indian Ocean side of South Africa, where I will be conducting interviews for an independent project.
