Come on Down!!! Two Track Athletes Find "Price is Right" and Take Home Prizes on Spring Break

Story posted April 10, 2001

The Bowdoin College men's track team made its way to San Diego during spring break to participate in the 2001 UC-San Diego Open, but two student-athletes found success off the track as well. Junior Tony Small (Shrewsbury, Mass./St. John's (S)) and first-year Greg Bangser (W. Hartford, Conn./Hall) each were selected to play on the daily television game show "The Price is Right" and both came away with quite a haul.

Bangser, who runs the middle-distance events for the Polar Bears, won two foldable bikes, a riding lawnmower, a grandfather clock and a bar set in addition to winning $1000 for hitting the dollar sign on the big wheel. Small - who participates in the spring events as well as playing
running back for the Bowdoin football team - was even more successful, winning a dinette set, a gift certificate to Jennifer Convertibles furniture store as well as a brand new Saturn SC-1 sports car.

"The first prize I was offered was a cuckoo clock, but Bob Barker leaned over and told me not to worry because the next prize was significantly better," said Small. "As soon as he said it, Rod Roddey screamed, 'A new car!', at which point I was ready to walk off of the stage. When I finally did win the car, the whole place kind of went silent and then I looked over to the Bowdoin crowd and they were all screaming, yelling, and high-fiving."

"It was great after the first bid got rid of the nerves," said Bangser. "It's a lot easier watching it on TV. You can't really understand anything from up on stage and there are cameras in the way so you can't see anything either."

Small competed in the 100-meter dash at the meet in San Diego, finishing fifth in his section in a time of 12:00. Bangser also competed in the 200-meter event, finishing third in his section in a time of 52.70.

Bangser's edition of "The Price is Right" will air on April 25th at 11:00am on the CBS affiliate, and Small's taping will be broadcast on the 26th at 11:00am.
