Beitz Named Editor of Leading Moral Philosophy Journal
Story posted August 23, 1999
Charles Beitz, professor of government and former dean for academic affairs at Bowdoin, has been appointed editor of the quarterly journal Philosophy & Public Affairs. Beitz succeeds Marshall Cohen, co-founder of the journal and its Editor since 1971. Cohen recently retired as professor of philosophy and law at the University of Southern California.
Beitz's philosophical articles have appeared in the journal and he served as its review editor from 1983 to 1994. The appointment was announced by Walter Lippincott, director of the Princeton University Press and publisher of the journal.
Philosophy & Public Affairs is an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of the philosophical and moral dimensions of important problems of public concern. It also publishes studies of the moral and intellectual history of these problems. Writing in The Times (of London) Higher Education Supplement, Peter Gibbons described it as "the leading journal in moral philosophy."
Beitz is on leave from his Bowdoin position this year and is a visiting scholar in political science at Columbia University.
