Board of Trustees Elects New Members, Officers

The Board of Trustees has elected three new members, re-elected two members and elected officers.
Deborah Jensen Barker ’80, Wanda Fleming Gasperetti’82 and Steven M. Schwartz ’70 have been elected for the first time to serve five-year terms on the Bowdoin Board of Trustees. Philip R. Cowen and Robert F. White ’77 were elected to serve their second five-year term on the Board. Donald R. Kurtz was elected to serve a three-year term as Chair; D. Ellen Shuman ’76 was elected to serve a two-year term as vice-chair and Anne W. Springer "81was elected to serve a five-year term as assistant secretary.
Barker graduated cum laude from Bowdoin and earned a master’s in business administration from Harvard. She has worked as a loan officer and managing director of investment banking. She has served on the boards of numerous organizations.
Gasperetti graduated magn cum laude from Bowdoin and earned a masters in public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, where she was a public service fellow. She has worked as a foundation executive, policy analyst, director of a volunteer program and a consultant to nonprofit organizations.
Schwartz is president and co-founder of Schwartz Communications. He graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin and earned a master of fine arts degree at Columbia University.
Cowen was elected to the Board of overseers in 1993. He earned a bachelor’s degree and master of business administration degree from New York University. Both of his children attended Bowdoin.
White is managing director of Bain Capital and a magna cum laude graduate of Bowdoin. He earned his master of business administration degree at Harvard. He has served as co-chair of the reunion giving committee and as a member of the class campaign committee.
Kurtz has served as a trustee since 1997 and served as an overseer from 1984 to 1996. He earned his master’s in business administration from Columbia University. He received the Alumni Service Award in 1997.
Shuman is director of investments for Yale University. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Bowdoin and earned a masters degree in public and private management from the Yale School of Management. She has served on the Board since 1992.
Springer is the associate dean of admissions at Bowdoin. She has also worked as director of alumni relations at Bowdoin and as a college relations coordinator and a personnel placement representative for J.C. Penny Co.
