Activities Galore Planned for Parents Weekend October 2-3

Sept. 21, 1998, BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin will welcome parents to campus the weekend of Oct. 2-3 with three full days of activities and events. A highlight of the weekend is the celebration of scholarly achievement by students in the Sarah and James Bowdoin Day Exercises. The keynote speaker is Dr. Jonathan D. Spence, Sterling Professor of History at Yale University. (See accompanying story.) His lecture is sponsored by the Alfred E. Golz Lecture Fund.

On Friday, parents are invited to attend classes with their sons and daughters, and to tour the newly renovated Bowdoin Chapel. In the early afternoon, there will be open houses at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Career Planning Center and the Athletics Department. Financial Aid information will be available for parents, as well as a demonstration of electronic library resources.

Student and faculty processions begin at 3:40 p.m. at Massachusetts Hall, followed by the keynote address at 4 p.m.

At 8 p.m., master hypnotist Thomas Bresadola will perform in Morrell Gymnasium. And at 9:30 p.m., the student improvisational comedy troupe, Improvabilities, will perform in the Main Lounge of Moulton Union.

Saturday's events open with a discussion with College President Robert H. Edwards, Dean for Academic Affairs Charles R. Beitz and Dean of Student Affairs Craig W. Bradley from 9-10:30 a.m. in Daggett Lounge.

There will be sailing in Harpswell, academic presentations and sports events throughout the morning. In the afternoon, there will be receptions for international students and their host families and for students of color, as well as concerts, a football game and an opening for an exhibit of the art of Ronald R. Parry.

A 7 p.m. choral concert in the Bowdoin Chapel will feature the Bowdoin Chamber Choir and the Bowdoin Chorus. At 8 p.m. students will perform in the Morrell Gymnasium as members of the Meddiebempsters, Miscellania and BOCA.

Sunday's activities start with a 5K run through Farley fields. A jazz brunch will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Moulton Union, and a 2 p.m. Concert Band performance will be held on the plaza of the Visual Arts Center.
