BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The DaPonte String Quartet will present a concert on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Main Lounge, Moulton Union, Bowdoin College. The public is invited free of charge and no tickets are required.
The program is Haydn's String Quartet in D Major, op. 64, no. 5; Samuel BarberUs String Quartet, op. 11; and, Grieg's String Quartet in G Minor, op. 27.
Founded in 1991, the DaPonte String Quartet - violinists Dean Arthur Stein and Ferdinand Liva, violist Mark Preston and cellist Myles Jordan - is completing the National Endowment for the Arts/Chamber Music America Rural Residency grant that first brought them to Maine three years ago. Besides their regular concert series and special events throughout Maine, the quartet has presented live concerts in the schools in the Midcoast area, giving children an up-close experience with serious music.
The quartet has recently completed recording a second CD. Their first disc contains the music of Beethoven and Hugo Wolf. The new disc is devoted to 20th century music and includes works by Schulhoff, Shostakovich, and Maine resident Gia Comolli. This performance is co-sponsored by the Bowdoin College Department of Music and the Donald M. Zuckert Visiting Professorship.
