BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College has been awarded a challenge grant in the amount of $375,000 for use by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. Under the terms of the Mellon Foundation grant, the Museum of Art must raise $275,000 over the next three years, thereby establishing an endowment fund in the amount of $650,000.
Two previous grants from the Mellon Foundation, totaling nearly $300,000, offered the Museum of Art the opportunity to strengthen the educational role of its collections and programs, and to enhance the partnership between the museum and the College as a whole. For example, the Foundation's awards enabled the museum to hire a curatorial intern and to support an undergraduate research fellowship.
The new Mellon Foundation endowment will encourage the development of permanent links between the Museum and the larger academic community.
