BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Nahyon Lee '96 of Burnsville, Minn., has been awarded a $18,000 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for 1997-98 to study the roots of traditional Latin dance.

Lee is among 60 graduating seniors in the United States chosen from 182 nominees to receive a $18,000 Watson Fellowship grant for a year of independent study and travel. More than 1,000 graduating college seniors from 50 participating colleges vied for the scholarships in what was an unusually competitive year. Lee is the 49th student from Bowdoin to receive the fellowship.

Watson Fellows design their own projects, which may involve any area of interest. Lee will travel to Argentina, Chile, Spain, and Venezuela to study the roots of traditional Latin dance.

Lee is a government and environmental studies major who has been involved with the Department of Theater and Dance as both a choreographer and dancer. She is also the coordinator and a charter member of Bowdoin's HIV Peer Education Group, a Student Union Committee member, and an oboist in the Bowdoin Concert Band.

The Watson Fellowships are awarded through a national competition of seniors from participating colleges. The foundation selects Watson Fellows based upon each nominee's character, leadership potential, willingness to immerse him or herself in new cultures, and the creativity and personal significance of the project proposed.

"Our hope is that a life-changing year spent pursuing dreams and passions overseas, whatever they are, will result in Watson Fellows enriching business, science, the arts, academia and other fields when they return to America," said William F.L. Moses, executive director of the Watson Foundation.

The Thomas J. Watson Foundation is a charitable trust founded in 1961 by the widow of Mr. Thomas J. Watson, Sr., to honor her husband, the founder of IBM. Now in its 27th year, more than 1,900 Watson Fellowships have been awarded with stipends totaling approximately $20,000,000.
