BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Robert Pinsky, a nationally renowned poet, translator and critic, will be reading selections from his works and signing books at Bowdoin College on Tuesday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Daggett Lounge, Wentworth Hall. The reading is open to the public free of charge
The Figured Wheel: New and Collected Poems 1965-1995 is Pinsky's most recent publication and is considered a milestone not only in his career, but in American poetry as well. Other works by Pinsky include An Explanation of America, The Want Bone and History of My Heart, which was awarded the William Carlos Williams Prize of the Poetry Society of America. His collection of essays, Poetry and the World, was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle award in criticism. He is also co-translator of The Separate Notebooks, poems by Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz.
One of Pinsky's recent projects, The Inferno of Dante, a new verse translation, teamed the poet with artist Michael Mazur. An exhibition of Mazur's original monotypes that are based on Pinsky's text opens at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art on Thursday, January 30. Pinsky's translation of Dante's classic text was awarded the Los Angeles Times Book Award in poetry and the Howard Morton Landon Prize for translation. A Book-of-the-Month-Club Editor's Choice, The Inferno of Dante appeared on the Best Sellers lists of The Boston Globe and New York Newsday. It has been celebrated by Stephen Greenblatt as, "the premier modern text for English-language readers to experience Dante's power."
Since 1989 Pinsky has been a faculty member of the graduate creative writing program at Boston University. Previously, he taught at the University of California at Berkeley and at Wellesley College. He earned degrees at Rutgers University and Stanford University.
An Evening with Robert Pinsky is sponsored by the Department of English and the Bowdoin College Museum of Art with support from the Henry Luce Foundation.
