NEW YORK - Steven Cerf, George Lincoln Skolfield Jr. Professor of German, will deliver a pre-opera lecture for the performance of Richard Strauss's Daphne at the New York City Opera on Saturday, September 11.
Cerf's lecture is titled "Daphne's Metamorphosis." He will analyze the dramatic and musical devices Strauss employs to depict Daphne's transformation from human being to divinized mortal.
In addition, he will speak about why New York City has had to wait so long - 66 years - for this first staged performance of Strauss's late opera.
Cerf's lecture will run from noon to 1 p.m., at New York State Theater (enter through the stage entrance at 62nd St. & Columbus Ave.). Tickets are required.
