If you use a Windows computer, you may have noticed that there are two network drives that go to the same place: G and H. Both drives go to your personal file space, the G drive just takes a longer route. This can be confusing! You will soon only see the H drive. If you were using the G drive, don't worry! Your files are still there -- you'll just be taking a more direct path to get to them.

Microsoft Office 2007 will be available to Bowdoin Staff and Faculty starting November 2, 2009. By the 2010-11 academic year, Word 2007, Excel 2007, and Powerpoint 2007 will be standard for all Bowdoin's computer labs and classrooms using Windows.

IT is pleased to announce that it has expanded its licensing with Wolfram (makers of Mathematica) to include student licensing. This means that students may now download the program to their personal computers. Mathematica is a powerful computational tool used in the sciences, and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Did you ever wonder what IT people do all summer? During the month of July and August, over 200 computers were delivered and setup around campus. Most of these computers were part of the 4 year computer replacement cycle, while others were CAP-funded computers or part of lab upgrades. Computers were inventoried, and utilizing our Altiris management software, IT staff spent much of June prepping the computers for deployment. This method reduces the amount of time that IT staff spend on each computer setup appointment, as software is already installed by the time the computer is delivered to the end-user. While PCs were in the majority this summer, we have continued to see a trend of users opting to transition to the Mac platform. In addition to computers, IT staff also setup specialized software, large format scanners, monitors, and upgraded many computers …
