Center for Learning and Teaching

Welcome

Bowdoin College has a group of programs developed to support learning and teaching throughout the curriculum. The three programs and the ESL tutor are housed together in 102 Kanbar Hall and work cooperatively to enhance Bowdoin's curricular resources and to strengthen students' academic experience. The Baldwin Program for Academic Development, the Quantitative Skills Program, the Writing Project, and the ESL tutor are described below.

Baldwin Program for Academic Development

Elizabeth Barnhart, Director

Provides support to students including help with reading, time management, organization, general learning strategies, and help in specific courses. Daytime and evening drop in hours available.

Quantitative Skills Program

Linda Kirstein, Director

Provides support to students in understanding and using numerical information. Peer tutors provide study groups, workshops, and some individual tutorials for students in quantitative courses.

Writing Project

Kathleen O'Connor, Director

Students in any discipline work with peer writing assistants to improve their writing process and strengthen their writing. Writing assistants work with students in selected courses, drop-in workshops, and semester – or year-long partnerships.

ESL & English for multilingual students

Lisa Flanagan

Students who are multi-lingual or who have parents who are non-native speakers of English may work with Lisa Flanagan, ESL writing tutor. They may seek help with understanding assignments and reading strategies; grammar; outlining, revising, and editing; and the conventions of scholarly writing. To schedule an appointment to meet with the ESL coordinator send a request to baldwinc@bowdoin.edu.
