December Dance Concert

  • Event Type: Performance

Bowdoin's annual December Dance Concert will be held in the new Edwards Art Center, Studio 210, on and will feature works choreographed by Bowdoin Dance faculty Nyama McCarthy Brown, Gwyneth Jones and Paul Sarvis.

Thrilled to be performing in the new dance studio, the Modern I Repertory and Performance class present a new work that plays with ideas of formality versus informality. Accompanied by twelve chairs and music from the Bremer Kaffeehaus Orchester and the Comedian Harmonists, the dancers experiment with movement and behavior filling a space twice the size of Pickard stage.

Kaleidoscope, performed by a trio of ballet students investigates ballet outside of the traditional context. Ballet positions are deconstructed, turned upside down, and physically manipulated. Fragmentations of ballet vocabulary are explored throughout the piece. Students in this work also perform a second short piece currently under construction.

Responding to the scale and depth of the new dance studio in the Edwards Arts Center, an elegant quintet of dancers from the advanced repertory course performs Winterreise (Winter Journey). Playing off the mathematical completeness of Bach's two and three part inventions, the dancers inhabit a vaguely Germanic landscape with additional musical help from Schubert, and an unlikely cover of the Beatles' "Yesterday."
