Brunswick Film Premiere: Marriage in the Shadows, 1947

Introduction and Panel Discussion by William R. Kenan Jr., Professor of German and the Humanities Emerita Helen Cafferty; George Lincoln Skofield Jr., Professor of German Steven Cerf; Associate Professor of German Birgit Tautz; and Associate Professor of Film Studies on the Marvin H. Green, Jr., Fund, Tricia Welsch.

The newly released digital restoration of the East German film "Marriage in the Shadows" was the first German feature film to explicitly address the persecution of Jews by the Nazis and called on Germans to accept collective responsibility for the crimes of the Third Reich.  Kurt Maetzig's debut film is based on the acclaimed German theater couple Meta Wolff and Joachim Gottschalk.  Shown in all four sectors of occupied Berlin and across Germany, the initial release of the film reached 10 million viewers.  In English with German subtitles.

Free and open to the public.
