Location: Visual Arts Center, Beam Classroom
Event Type: Lecture
Dr. Ron Buckmire He's Chair of the Mathematics Department at Occidental College and is also Board President and Co-founder of the Barbara Jordan/Bayard Rustin Coalition, the only black LGBT advocacy organization in Southern California. In the Fall of 2008, he was in the eye of the electoral hurricane called Proposition 8. The campaign to amend the California constitution to say that "Only a marriage between a man and a woman shall be valid or recognized" was the nation's most expensive ballot measure fight on a social issue in history: a combined 83 million dollars was spent on both sides. Dr. Buckmire will present his perspective as one of the estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who were legally married before Proposition 8 passed and as a black gay activist who has been working to promote marriage equally since 1993. Sponsored by Africana Studies, Gender & Women Studies, Gay & Lesbian Studies, the Queer-Trans Resource Center, Bowdoin Queer Straight Association, College Democrats, and Reed, Quinby, Helmreich, and Howell houses. Open to students, faculty, and staff.
