Senior Lecturer in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

Reed Johnson spent most of a decade living and working in nonprofit organizations in Russia, as well as travelling throughout Eurasia during his time overseas. He received an MFA in English and an MA and PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Virginia, after which he taught at Harvard University in the Writing Program and was awarded a Harvard Excellence in Teaching Award for Lecturers and Preceptors. His research interests include Soviet and Russian science fiction and speculative fiction, narrative theory, and language pedagogy. Alongside his scholarly work, he has also translated Russian prose and screenplays and writes fiction and nonfiction, publishing his work in journals like The New England Review, The Gettysburg Review and online at the New Yorker. He has been a guest on NPR’s Weekend Edition, and a recent story of his was selected by Jonathan Lethem for inclusion in the 2019 volume of Best American Mystery Stories.
