Gift Given in Honor and Memory of Robert de Sherbinin

A longtime class agent and a great friend of the College, Robert de Sherbinin of the Class of 1945 touched many lives during his time spent with Bowdoin.

One of those individuals is Sheldon M. Stone of the Class of 1974, who recently established the Robert I. de Sherbinin Scholarship Fund in his honor and memory to provide financial assistance to Bowdoin undergraduates.

It was Bob who interviewed Sheldon during the admissions process and greatly influenced his decision to attend Bowdoin. Although the two kept in touch over the years, that interview was the one time they met in person.

“Bob was passionate about the College and he was quite perceptive,” says Sheldon. “He knew Bowdoin would be the right place for me and helped me arrange a campus visit.  I took him up on the challenge.”

Sheldon graduated with a degree in government, and went on to earn an M.B.A. from Columbia University in 1978. He has been a Bowdoin trustee since 2001, is currently chair of the College’s Investment Committee, and is a principal with Oaktree Capital Management.
