In his youth, Mitchell was a member of the Boys Club and was later inducted into its Hall of Fame.

Gov. John Baldacci is to be the master of ceremonies for Thursday evening's event. According to a Maine Sunday Telegram article, the more than 400 expected guests include Mitchell's family, George J. Mitchell scholars and Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott.

The article, "The Man for the Job," also reports that a special video will be shown, featuring former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern.

The article includes quotes from former Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen '62, a fellow Mainer and longtime friend who served with Mitchell in the Senate.

"When you talk about intelligence and integrity and commitment, you think of George Mitchell," says Cohen in the piece, calling Mitchell an extraordinary public servant. "His name is known, virtually, by leaders throughout the world."
