Story posted October 13, 2009

Bowdoin has made yet another appearance on a popular television show.

The October 11, 2009, episode of Mad Men titled "Wee Small Hours" features the character Suzanne Farrell jogging in a Bowdoin T-shirt.

Mad Men, set in a Madison Avenue advertising agency in the early 1960s, has received critical acclaim, particularly for its historical authenticity and visual style, and has won multiple awards, including nine Emmys and three Golden Globes.

Sopranos–Bowdoin Episode Hits High Note with TV Guide

Mad Men executive producer Matthew Weiner was a writer on another popular cable series, HBO's The Sopranos, which wove Bowdoin into an ongoing storyline. In June 2009, TV Guide ranked "College," the episode in which Meadow Soprano travels to Maine with her mobster father, Tony, to visit Bowdoin, Bates and Colby, the second-greatest episode in the history of television. The gray T-shirt worn by "McDreamy" was a popular item after its television debut last fall, but has since been discontinued.

Fitting "McDreamy" to a T

Last fall, another Bowdoin tee made the rounds on the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy.

Twice last season Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd, played by Maine native Patrick Dempsey, was shown wearing the shirt.

The show's costume supervisor did request more Bowdoin apparel, but said only, "Keep your eyes open."

The Bowdoin-Grey's Anatomy connection was the culmination of a two-year campaign to adopt Dr. Shepherd as a Bowdoin grad, a plan conceived and spearheaded by Cole Harris '78. Read more about the shirt's recurring role.

Tee with the President

Yet another Bowdoin tee, this one included in the ABC News photo gallery, "Barack Obama Behind the Scenes," is worn by Richard Bland '95, director of federal government relations for the YMCA, as he plays basketball with the president at Camp David. View the photo.
