Statement by President Mills on "Amethyst Initiative"
Story posted August 19, 2008
Bowdoin College President Barry Mills has not signed his name to the "Amethyst Initiative," which calls for a reassessment of the 21 year-old drinking age in America.
"I understand the arguments and am in agreement with many of the points raised about underage drinking on college campuses. I believe, however, that the conversation and debate about an appropriate legal drinking age needs to be much broader. This is an important and complex issue, but it goes well beyond the gates of America's college and university campuses since many young people who would be affected by a change in America's drinking laws are not enrolled in college. While I have chosen not to sign on to this initiative, I welcome the important discussions on this issue that will certainly now follow."
