Timothy W. Foster Appointed Dean of Student Affairs

Story posted April 17, 2006

Bowdoin College has named Timothy W. Foster as the new Dean of Student Affairs. President Barry Mills sent the following announcement to the College community on April 17, 2006.

To Members of the Bowdoin Community,

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Timothy W. Foster to the position of Dean of Student Affairs at Bowdoin. Tim, who will succeed Craig Bradley as dean, emerged as the clear choice for this critical position following a national search and a review of more than sixty applicants from colleges and universities across America.

Tim Foster

Tim's ability to step seamlessly into this position upon Craig's departure is a clear benefit to Bowdoin, but continuity was secondary in our decision. Tim Foster is a leader at Bowdoin, a respected and admired member of our community, and a person of conviction with his own distinct vision for this position. He is absolutely the right person to lead our student affairs programs at this exciting time of growth and renewal at Bowdoin. I am tremendously pleased with his appointment and grateful to Tim for his willingness to serve Bowdoin in this new capacity.

Tim earned his undergraduate degree in geography at Dartmouth College, and his master's degree -- also in geography -- at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career has been characterized by success in leadership positions in student affairs and residential life at Dartmouth, Carnegie Mellon University, and, since 1996, at Bowdoin.

During his ten years here, Tim has had a hand in myriad initiatives aimed at strengthening and advancing the student experience at Bowdoin. He has been instrumental in helping us to attract and retain a pluralistic community of students, in improving residential life facilities and programs, in emphasizing wellness and strengthening our health and counseling services, and in cultivating strong interaction between all members of our learning community. He has served as chair of our campus-wide task force aimed at increasing diversity at Bowdoin; as co-author of the proposal that created the Baldwin Center for Learning and Teaching; and as chair of the building committee for the Schwartz Outdoor Leadership Center.

These have been tremendously valuable and lasting contributions, but perhaps most important, Tim has earned the respect, friendship, and admiration of trustees, faculty, students, and staff at the College for his energy, enthusiasm, follow-through, proven strategic planning skills, solid financial and administrative abilities, and for the noticeable passion and ability he brings to this work.

My thanks to members of our search committee -- Mitch Davis, Mike Igoe '07, Sarah McMahon, Steve Naculich, Kathy Peterson, Eli Orlic, Krista Van Vleet, Taneisha Wilson '07, and Peter Wagner -- for their diligent and thorough work on behalf of the College.

Throughout our history, the essence of a Bowdoin education has included not only a first-rate academic experience, but also the many opportunities for students to grow and learn from others across the campus -- in the College houses, the residence halls, activity offices, studios, performance spaces, and on our playing fields. These programs require thoughtful leadership that is constant, creative, and proactive. I am confident that we have such a leader in Tim Foster, and I know each of you joins me in congratulating him for this well-deserved appointment.

Sincerely yours,
Barry Mills
