John Grant '58 Wins Distinguished Bowdoin Educator Award

John B. Grant, Bowdoin Class of 1958, has won the 2000 Distinguished Bowdoin Educator Award from the collegeís Alumni Council.
The annual award, which recognizes "outstanding achievement in the field of education," by alumni/ae of the college, was presented on Saturday, June 3 at the Bowdoin Reunion Convocation. The award alternates annually between educators at the primary/secondary and post-secondary levels.
Grant is a former English teacher and guidance counselor at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, Maine. While at Lincoln Academy, he founded the L.A. Players, a group of actors whose interactive performances address chemical dependency, AIDS awareness, abuse, and other issues pertinent to teen-agers today. Begun in 1986 as an outgrowth of the schoolís work with at-risk students, L.A. Players continues to perform each year to dozens of student groups, as it did under Mr. Grantís direction from its inception until his retirement in 1998.
Mr. Grant has been a member of the Central Lincoln County Drug and Alcohol Team since its formation in 1983. He is a founding member of the Lincoln County Juvenile Task Force and the Weymouth House Group Homes. He is a former member of the Bath/Brunswick Mental Health Agency board of directors and the Maine Department of Health and Welfare Community Board. He earned the Governorís Medal for his work in drug and alcohol abuse prevention in 1993.
Upon graduation from Bowdoin, Mr. Grant earned a masterís degree at the University of Minnesota. He has pursued further study at Johns Hopkins University, Oslo University, Seattle University, and the University of London. Prior to joining the Lincoln Academy faculty, he taught at the France Hill County Secondary School in Surrey, England, and the Oldfields School in Glencoe, Maryland, and served as headmaster of the Helen Bush-Parkside School in Seattle. Grant lives in Newcastle, Maine, with his wife, Martha.
