Four Bowdoin Seniors and One Alumnus Earn Fulbright Grants

Four Bowdoin College seniors and a recent alumnus have been awarded prestigious Fulbright Fellowships to study and teach abroad for one year.
The four students are: Johanna Babb of Camden, Maine; Jessie T. Cmaylo of Hampden, Maine; Lisl K. Hacker of Hollis, N.H.; and John E. Senior of Cincinnati, Ohio. Cmaylo will be studying in Sri Lanka; Babb, Hacker, and Senior will be in Germany. In addition, Peter Dorthe í98 has received a teaching award.
Congress created the Fulbright Program in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges. A full grant typically provides for transportation, and living and working expenses for graduate study or research abroad.
Babb has been given an award to teach English in Mecklenburg, Germany. She is a deanís list student who holds a double major in German and economics and a minor in government. She lettered in alpine skiing and field hockey at Bowdoin. She was captain of field hockey team her senior year.
Cmaylo has received a full award to travel to Sri Lanka and study the Buddhist sculptures called kapuralas. She is a deanís list student with a major in religion and a minor in sociology.
Hacker has received an award to teach English in Fulda, Germany. She is graduating with a double major in psychology and German and is a deanís list student. She lettered in tennis and basketball.
Senior has been given a full award to conduct research in Tubingen, Germany, on the reception of American politics in German mass media. He is a deanís list student and a Sarah and James Bowdoin scholar. He has a double major in philosophy and religion and a minor in German. He has lettered in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Dorthe will be teaching English in Bremen, Germany. He graduated cum laude from Bowdoin last year with a double major in German and neuroscience. He earned Highest Honors in German at his graduation.
