Meddiebempsters Plan East Coast Tour

Story posted January 05, 2000

The Meddiebempsters, Bowdoinís all-male a cappella singing troupe, has planned a nine-city, eight-day tour starting Jan. 13 in Atlanta.

Their ambitious schedule includes stops in Charlotte; Washington, D.C.; New Jersey; Philadelphia; New York City; Providence and Boston.

The Meddiebempsters were formed in 1937 and named after Meddybemps, a tiny Washington County town.

According to Tim Hayes í00, the group traditionally includes travel as part of its winter break plans; they even traveled with the USO in the 1950s. Three years ago, they did an East Coast tour with fewer stops than this year; two years ago, they went to England; last year, Bermuda.

They usually target places with strong Bowdoin College alumni clubs, Hayes said, because alumni are enthusiastic audiences with local connections who help them get inexpensive places to stay. The Alumni Office also shares the burden of scheduling and marketing the tours.

"Itís really fun to do stuff for alums," Hayes said. "We love to hear their old stories."

They also try to do shows at colleges with a cappella groups, or at high schools or colleges that have some connection to a former or current member of the group.

Seven of the 12 Meddiebempsters are flying to Boston, where a member from South Berwick will meet them with a Bowdoin College van. They then will drive to Atlanta, picking up the remaining members along the way. Most of the members live on the East Coast, but one is flying in from Michigan to join the tour.

The stops include seven Bowdoin alumni clubs, Georgetown University and the exclusive Anglers Club in New York, where influential Wall Street movers and shakers network.
