President Edwards Announces Intent to Retire

Story posted October 05, 1999

In a letter to the Bowdoin community, he emphasized his aim "not to await a new administration but to prepare to greet it with a College filled with vital force and ready for fresh energies and ideas."

Donald R. Kurtz '52, chairman of the Board of Trustees, announced that a search committee to select a new president for the College would be established at the next meeting of the Board, in late October. The committee will include trustees, faculty, students, staff and members of the Alumni Council.

By the time Pres. Edwards retires, he "will have served as Bowdoin’s president for 11 years," Kurtz said. "He has led the College throughout the 1990s with extraordinary vision, determination and skill. We shall miss him more than I can say."
