Nine Appointed to Bowdoin College Alumni Council

The Bowdoin College Alumni Council has appointed nine new members, the largest ever incoming group of Council members.

The Alumni Council serves Bowdoin’s 16,000 alumni/ae by providing executive oversight of alumni programs administered by the College, including Homecoming and Reunion weekends, alumni Bowdoin clubs throughout the world, and career services. In addition, the Council recognizes outstanding volunteer contributions to Bowdoin through an awards program it administers.

The nine new members of the Alumni Council were selected from nearly 160 nominees from alumni, faculty and staff. Each member will serve for four years.

The new members are:

o Mark W. Bayer '79 of Plano, Texas, a partner in the Dallas law firm of Gardere & Wynne, LLP;
o Ella Frederiksen Brown '84 of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, an associate with the Portland law firm of Pierce Atwood;
o Ann Price Davis '73 of Louisville, Ky., a free-lance graphic designer;
o Robert J. Kemp '51 of Norwell, Mass., a retired marketing executive;
o Thomas A. Leung '96 of Cambridge, Mass., a graduate student at Harvard Business School;
o Tamara A. Nikuradse '84 of Wellesley, Mass., a product manager at the Gillette Co., of Boston;
o Joel B. Sherman '61 of Charlestown, Mass., a vice president and director of Goulston & Storrs PC, a Boston law firm;
o Michael T. Townsend '90 of Arlington, Va., a group director with Powell Tate of Washington, D.C. Townsend is
serving a one-year unexpired term on the Council;
o Sara Wasinger True '92 of Golden, Colo., a graphic designer with Envision Graphics of Englewood, Colo.;

The nine new members will begin their work the weekend of Sept. 17, when the Council meets on campus. The Alumni Council comprises 23 appointed members, as well as student, faculty and staff representatives.

The Council meets on campus twice yearly and in frequent committee meetings. It has five standing committees: awards, career services, clubs, communications and nominations. The executive committee comprises the chairs of each committee and the officers of the Council. Members of the executive committee for 1999-2000 are:

o Gregory E. Kerr '79, who begins his second year as chair of the Alumni Council. Kerr, of New York City, is an anesthesiologist at Cornell Medical Center in New York.
o William E. Chapman II '63, of Hyannisport, Mass. and Longboat Key, Fla., who chairs the clubs committee. Chapman is a consultant with Longboat Retirement Planning Solutions, Inc.
o Peter K. Deeks '63 of New Vernon, N.J., who chairs the career services committee. Deeks is a former managing director of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc.
o Michel J. LePage '78 of Cumberland, Maine, who chairs the nominations committee. LePage is a realtor with Re/Max Heritage of Yarmouth.
o Charles G. Pohl '83 of Weston, Mass., who chairs the awards committee. Pohl is a senior vice president with Putnam Management Co. in Boston.
o Joyce A. Ward '75 of Harvard, Mass., who chairs the communications committee. Ward is director of classification for Northern Light Technology, LLC, of Cambridge, Mass..
o Kevin P. Wesley '89 of Brunswick, Maine, who is director of alumni relations at Bowdoin and secretary/treasurer of the Alumni Council.
