BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College will host several events for the public to celebrate the holidays. The public is welcome to attend free of charge.
The Bowdoin College Museum of Art will sponsor a holiday celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served and the celebration will feature performances by the Bowdoin College Chamber Choir and three student a cappella groups -- the Meddiebempsters, Miscellania and BOCA. The museum gift shop will be open during the celebration.
Bowdoin's annual Festival of Lessons and Carols will take place on Thursday, Dec. 4, and Friday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Bowdoin College Chapel. Both performances are free and open to the public. Due to limited space, tickets are required and can be picked up at the Smith Union Information Desk and at Macbean's Music in Brunswick.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols combines scriptural readings with music for the season, accompanied by organ, brass and strings. Works by Josquin, Bach, Charpentier, and Boyce will be featured along with hymns for congregational singing. The Rev. Larch Fidler will preside, and music direction is provided by Emily Matchett of the Bowdoin Class of 1999 and Henry Brondshpits of the Bowdoin Class of 1997.
The third annual Sunsplash will be held Monday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The daylong event will feature entertainment, arts and crafts and refreshments for the whole family.
Among the highlights are a craft fair featuring 28 vendors from Maine and New Hampshire from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Morrell Lounge and Smith Union; the Oakhurst Farm hot chocolate wagon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; hayrides, face painting and a caricaturist from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; a coffeehouse with free coffee, tea and treats from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.; and music by various Bowdoin groups.
