Allen Wells Named Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College Professor of History Allen Wells has been named associate dean for academic affairs at the College, effective July 1, 1997.
Wells succeeds Susan A. Kaplan, who will become acting dean for academic affairs on August 1, in place of Charles R. Beitz who will begin a sabbatical.
Wells joined the Bowdoin faculty in 1988, having taught previously at Appalachian State University and at the University of California, San Diego (1985). He earned his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at Binghamton, and his master's degree and doctorate at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Wells is the author of several books and numerous articles, book chapters and essays on Mexican and Latin American history. His most recent book, Summer of Discontent, Seasons of Upheaval: Elite Politics and Rural Insurgency in Yucatan, 1876-1915, is co-authored with Gilbert M. Joseph (Stanford, 1997).
Wells has served as chair of Bowdoin's History Department, as chair of the Committee on Faculty Affairs, and as a member of Bowdoin's Recording Committee and its Strategic Planning Task Force.
As associate dean, Wells will have a wide range of duties, including oversight of the recruitment of new members of the faculty.
