Assistant Professor of Psychology Sam Putnam's research on shyness in children is featured in the story "Secrets of the Shy" in the April 4, 2005 issue of TIME Magazine.
In his lab, Putnam observes how toddlers react to soap bubbles, Halloween masks, noisemakers, and other toys. Whether they "thrill to the new" or "retreat into the cozy and safe" may offer clues to solving the mysteries of shyness.
