School Year Outreach

Monthly meetings often focus on students' academic progress and needs. Counselors provide the following during school visits: 

• Goal Setting 
• Monitor academic performance and attendance 
• Advise students on course selection that will be challenging and provide solid preparation for college 
• Build study skills, organization, and time management to support students' academic achievement 
• Set up tutoring when students need extra support with material, etc. 

School visits are also a time to catch up on other aspects of the student's life, including extracurricular activities, job, family life, etc. Counselors really care about the whole student and know that students have a lot on their minds that can impact academic life. 

Throughout the year, the counselors support students with the college process, including: 

• determining interests and finding good fit colleges 
• advising and support through the application process 
• advising on the financial aid and scholarship process, and admission testing requirements 
• making a good fit decision for their college choice 

Applying to college is free for UB students! By participating in TRIO Upward Bound, students are automatically eligible for application fee waivers. Upward Bound also provides fee waivers for admissions tests like the SATs and ACTs. 

Upward Bound students are encouraged to visit the campuses of the colleges they're interested in attending. The program helps students with interviewing skills and can assist with visiting arrangements, including covering some travel expenses.
