Each year we hire one student from each first year dorm and each second year college house who outreach specifically to their dorm, as well as several Eco Reps at large who do outreach to the entire community. Through the Eco Rep program, our office spreads the values of sustainability and stewardship to all corners of campus.

Eco Reps divide their work between furthering sustainability outreach and education in their residences and collaborating on bigger projects to increase Bowdoin's overall engagement with environmental issues. The work is as varied as the individuals who apply, and students of all interests and experience are encouraged to apply for these jobs. In recent years, Eco Reps have organized clothing swaps, led campus to victory in energy usage reduction challenges, implemented reusable cup usage in college houses, worked within dorms to reduce water usage, and shown enormous commitment to helping their peers form more sustainable living habits.

Every year, a number of students are hired to work in the Sustainability Office. Some students apply with a specific task or project in mind, and others are employed to take care of the thousand odd tasks and duties that pop up over the course of the year. In recent years, Sustainability Office Student Workers have tended compost bins all over campus, organized panels of speakers, created Earth Day events, and tabulated energy and waste data for annual greenhouse gas emissions reports. This job is open to all students, regardless of experience, and is one of the best ways to get a comprehensive look at all that sustainability at Bowdoin entails.

Each summer the Sustainability Office hires 1-2 students to work on our longer-term office projects. This past summer, our two summer student employees were working on projects related to Climate Action Plan 2.0 and our STARS recertification program. A summer job with the Sustainability Office is a great way to work more in-depth with our team, and a great way to spend a summer in Maine.
