Reunion 2021 To Be Celebrated Virtually
January 27, 2021 Email Message
Given continuing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and in consultation with reunion class leaders and Bowdoin leadership, we have made the decision to celebrate Reunion 2021 virtually. Read more in this message from Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Scott Meiklejohn.
Dear reunion classes and members of the Old Guard,
I am sorry to announce that, given continuing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and in consultation with reunion class leaders and Bowdoin leadership, we have decided to celebrate Reunion 2021 virtually.
Of course, this is not what we hoped for, and we share your disappointment. We pushed the decision into the new year on the chance that the global health picture would improve enough to allow us to gather on campus as we had planned, with the 2021 reunion classes as well as those who would have celebrated reunions last year. Unfortunately, the news is not good. The uneven rollout of vaccinations, new and more transmissible variants of the virus, state restrictions on the size of gatherings, and the inadvisability of travel convince us that this is the right decision—one that best protects the health and safety of the campus and Brunswick communities, as well as those of you who might be traveling to campus.
Rather than put anyone at risk, we are organizing all-alumni and class-based virtual programming, in coordination with alumni leaders, that will be available throughout the spring semester. Please watch for online opportunities to reconnect, celebrate together, and participate wherever you may be.
Looking ahead to better days: in 2022, we will invite our milestone 50th Reunion classes of 1970, 1971, and 1972 to campus for what should be a one-of-a-kind 50th Reunion celebration. In the meantime, and to honor our 25th Reunion classes of 1995 and 1996, we plan to host regional off-campus events for the Classes of 1995 and 1996 once it is safe to do so.
My staff colleagues are working with alumni and class volunteers on this year’s programming, and we will continue to share event details as they are finalized. Please visit bowdoin.edu/reunion for further information—the website will be updated as events take shape. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations or any one of us on the staff.
Stay well, Polar Bears—
Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations
