University

Universities offer the greatest breadth of subject areas to study and some of the highest opportunities for cultural immersion.

The different ways to enroll in host universities that vary greatly depending on factors like the host country’s language and the university’s existing administrative support (or necessity for program provider support). The options below represent different ways to enroll in a university, with an accompanying explanation about each model.

Direct

Direct: Students are hosted directly by the university, with all classes held at a host university with locals, mostly in the local language (though occasionally with English-taught classes in non-English settings.) The universitys international student office or incoming study abroad office provides administrative support around admissions, visas, orientation, registration, and housing. There may be a US based contact to coordinate with, though its possible for all administrative support to be in-country.
Provider
Provider: Most of the student’s academics will be taught by a local university with administrative and cultural support facilitated by the study abroad program provider. Housing options will vary by location, with most being immersive opportunities like home stays and living alongside local students. There will be a US based contact to coordinate with, as well as facilities on the ground.
Hybrid
Hybrid: Students can tailor their academic experience, based on their personal/cultural goals and linguistic abilities, by choosing from classes taught by the study abroad program provider and/or at a local university. Housing may likewise by offered by the program or alongside local students. There will be a US based contact to coordinate with, as well as facilities on the ground.
Exchange
Exchange: Students are hosted by an affiliated exchange university, with all classes held with locals, in foreign language. This model is similar to "Direct" but with even more independence. Bowdoins Off-Campus Study office facilitates the application process and oversees this exchange affiliation.
